...sphere about the size of a tennis ball -- called a pit -- a tricky process that takes a well- equipped nuclear laboratory. To make the bomb reach critical mass and set off a chain reaction -- nuclear fission -- you have to make the sphere implode in on itself. That requires a bang from about 800 lbs. of conventional explosives, packed around the plutonium. But the implosion has to apply perfectly uniform pressure from all sides, so all the explosives have to go off at exactly the same time, triggered by precisely placed high-energy capacitors -- devices capable of releasing enormous, rapid bursts...

Grant at least this much to Kim Il Sung: he certainly knew how to go out with a bang. The last Stalinist dictator managed to die just when the parts of the world most unsympathetic to him would miss the ultimate totalitarian the most. A god-king to his own people, a monster to those he waged war on and a riddle to almost everyone else, the only leader that communist North Korea has ever known perished at such a delicate point of diplomacy that even his sternest ill-wishers were praying that it was not true. ...This time Axel is investigating a gang of counterfeiters operating out of an L.A. theme park, meant to suggest Disneyland. The mystery is minimal, just an excuse to get everybody on the rides. Steven E. de Souza's script is not so much written as constructed -- boom boom here, bang bang there. John Landis' direction consists mostly of just running the camera...
