...Other players have waded into the fray too. José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, has urged Merkel to agree on a package of "coordinated bilateral loans" for Greece - or risk harming the euro. European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have also dismissed the IMF option, saying it would make the E.U. look incapable of resolving its own crises. (Sarkozy has his own reasons for keeping the IMF at bay: its managing director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is a potential rival in France's 2012 presidential election.) Others, like French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde...

Thank you for Joe Klein's article "West Bank Renewal" [March 8]. The West Bank and Gaza provide a study in contrasts. In the West Bank, where Palestinians made a commitment to peaceful coexistence, Israel has removed checkpoints, increased trade and invested in local businesses. In Gaza, where Hamas continues to threaten violence, the economy remains in ruins...

Though the security situation seemed very much under control and the local economy was vibrant, no Palestinian we met believed that they would have an independent state of their own any time soon. As Issa Kassissieh of the Palestinian Authority Negotiations Affairs Department put it, “There is no hope. The state of Israel cannot see their interests and the Israelis are not ready for peace.” What people viewed as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrogant and stubborn leadership...
