...institution which prides itself on being the premier educational institution in the world and one that values toleration, diversity and "rational discourse," I am baffled that the Undergraduate Council would recommend that the University ban ROTC ceremonies. Perhaps some of the undergraduates need remedial tutoring on the meaning of toleration and diversity. Is the appropriate response to percieved "discrimination" to retaliate by discrimination and punative measures? I doubt it. Can't we do better than this...

...staff acknowledges that the military's ban on openly gay cadets is unfair, and yet it would still allow ROTC to use precious Harvard Yard space during Commencement Week. This strikes us as inconsistent and wrong; Harvard should not give any kind of support to organizations or programs that discriminate against its own students...

...staff goes awry when it attempts to turn this ban into some grand, insensitive swipe at religious freedom rather than an understandable--if ineffective--precaution. Menorahs are dangerous. There were two incidents last semester in which makeshift menorahs started fires, and there is usually at least one such incident each year. Even a small fire can set off the sprinklers and cause tens of thousands of dollars of water damage; a large fire can be tragic. The staff writes that we should be treated as adults.
