...worried that on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Valdez accident, the spill and its toll are in danger of being forgotten - even as new offshore oil and gas exploration is being considered in Alaska. In 2007, former President George W. Bush ended a long-standing executive ban on offshore oil drilling in Bristol Bay in the southeastern waters of the Bering Sea, potentially opening up what's been called America's "fish basket" to the fossil fuels industry. Although the Obama Administration has slowed the process, it hasn't stopped it - and Alaska's Republican Gov. Sarah...
...authorities are afraid of. Having watched with growing concern as groups of unclad walkers criss cross the canton's stunning mountain paths and cow-studded meadows, the government decided that such a practice is not compatible with the canton's conservative ways. It has drafted a law that would ban public nudity, subjecting offenders to a $160 fine. The proposed legislation will be submitted to a popular vote on April 26, during Appenzell's annual Landsgemeinde, an open-air assembly in the town's picturesque main square, where all eligible citizens vote, by show of hands, on local laws...

As always, we will comply with the new restrictions on compensation ... in addition to continued adherence to the substantial changes we already have made to our compensation structure...

Central banks and financial technocrats are moving to end some of the more flagrant abuses and rethink the financial system's rules - but, inevitably, that is a slow and painstaking task. London needs to serve up some quicker fixes. One suggestion: an immediate ban on opaque off-balance-sheet "special purpose vehicles," which played such a big role in the meltdown (and in the Enron scandal). Another: the establishment of a G20 College of Supervisors, the beginning of a world regulatory body to oversee financial markets, coordinate national responses and troubleshoot crises at cross-border financial institutions...
