Lott is trying to outmaneuver McCain, perhaps by pre-empting his bill with one that Hagel has crafted--a rival measure that conservative Republicans find more palatable. Instead of an outright ban, Hagel's measure would put a cap of $60,000 on the soft-money contributions a business, union, pac or individual could make in any year. The Nebraska Senator says he's having "serious discussions" with Bush aides on fine-tuning the measure so the new President might back it. His opponents note that Ashcroft was given an "A" rating by the National Rifle Association and received nearly half a million dollars in campaign funds from the NRA and other gun groups during his reelection bid last fall - and they worry those debts could affect his enforcement and adoption of existing and pending gun laws...
...idea for Preuss came in the wake of California's 1998 ban on affirmative action, which caused UCSD's minority enrollment to drop a quarter. The university looked to recruit minority students through the traditional methods--faculty visits, fancy websites and brochures--but had little faith that these efforts would yield much...
