...trade were Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin and Moscow's Foreign Trade Minister, Nikolai Patolichev. Every flicker of emotion on the faces of the visitors could be vastly portentous. Suddenly, newsmen were invited into the Oval Office. They were astonished. The Russians were grinning and laughing and exchanging lively banter with the President over how to say "friendship" in two languages...
...Rock apparently aimed to be the caper movie to end them all. Unfortunately, it probably won't. William Goldman has transferred the patty-cake banter of his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to contemporary New York City, where he unleashes a quartet of schlemiel heist men (Robert Redford, George Segal, Ron Leibman, Paul Sand). Their task is to lift a gem called the Sahara stone and turn it over to the pompous African diplomat (Moses Gunn) who contracted for the job. They go to a lot of elaborate trouble to break into places. The gimmick is that...
...begin the 11,510-mile journey to Peking. As he and Pat walked past a score of congressional and Cabinet leaders in an unusual red-carpet sendoff, Nixon repeatedly poked officials jovially in the ribs, bent close to whisper remarks that newsmen could not overhear, laughed at the banter. Instead, there are complaints over rising taxes expected from a new sewage system and the costs of operating schools. In the paper-mill town of Berlin, Kelly's Pastry Shop now sells more doughnuts (7?) than turnovers (150?, as residents worry about living costs. "It takes two working now for a family to get what it needs," notes Mrs. Laura...
Because the movie deals in archetypes, it occasionally threatens to parody the genre it is honoring. Harry is so cool, so invincible, he almost flattens into one-dimensionality. Irrelevant references to his deceased wife and some cute banter about his nickname fail to fill out his personality. And because of Dirty Harry's oversimplification, Scorpio's vicious insanity (brilliantly conveyed by Andy Robinson) becomes a mere caricature of evil-an archenemy of Batman playing for keeps...
