Capturing the Moment As a man, I know I'm not supposed to shed tears except for deaths in the family, but I've got to admit that reading Nancy Gibbs' article on Barack Obama in this week's commemorative issue made my eyes misty [Nov. 17]. These were tears not of sorrow but of sheer appreciation for a wonderfully expressed essay about this transcendent moment in American history. Hervie Haufler, Shelburne...

...Many of us do know the contours of the new America we hope to see with the election of Barack Obama. It is an America whose values are not defined by the ignorance and sanctimonious arrogance of the Christian right. It is an America that has the courage to show the world that people of faith are compassionate, merciful and good stewards of the earth. We see in Barack Obama a rare combination of intelligence, integrity and humility - and hope he can get us out of the moral quagmire we've fallen into. Elizabeth Hooper, Atlanta...

...your clients aware that Barack Obama was elected and that he wants to close Guantanamo? They are. One client, Mr. [Lakhdar] Boumediene, the lead plaintiff, has been on hunger strike for two years. Twice a day they strap him in a chair, force his head back and put about two liters of the liquid protein Ensure down a tube through his nose into his stomach. It's a very brutal procedure, but they're determined that he not fast himself to death, so they do this to him. [When he found out Obama was elected] he was so excited that...
