...President Clinton gesticulates in vain to get Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak back on a path to peace, the specter of Lebanon is beginning to loom over the West Bank and Gaza. Four Israelis and two Palestinians were killed in fierce clashes Monday, in a new escalation of violence that has followed Israel's decision last week to begin assassinating Fatah militia leaders it believes are orchestrating attacks against Israelis. Last Thursday's helicopter rocket attack on a local militia leader in Bethlehem reminded many Israeli commentators of their army?s tactics in Lebanon, and the association is an uncomfortable...
...situation. He knew Israel's army was itching to punch harder. In fact, the deputy chiefs of staff of Israel's army, military intelligence and domestic intelligence service were pushing for a tougher response after the shooting deaths of three Israeli soldiers on Wednesday. Their plan, vetoed by Barak, included risky, lightning strikes into Palestinian villages by undercover forces dressed as Arabs. Arafat feared that the conflict would spiral into a full-scale war. And even if he believes that, how can he suggest that Barak give up doing what is right in exchange for the military imposition of a peace...
Krauthammer's comparison of Ehud Barak with Neville Chamberlain, implicitly equating Arafat and the Palestinians with Hitler and Nazi Germany, was ludicrous. Were British forces occupying Germany at the time of Chamberlain's negotiations? Was Hitler the leader of fighters armed primarily with rocks, bottles and handguns? The two situations are not parallel in the least. The Palestinians are frustrated with the ongoing occupation. They have been given only symbolic aspects of statehood. JEFFREY DAVIS Durham...
