...appeal of easy, fresh food is not hard to understand. Exhausted by daily schedules that include work and working out, tired and hungry wage earners crave the instant satisfaction of ready-made meals. Even the hassle of restaurants is too much for the weariest workers, who prefer the barefoot comforts of home. Some may make the effort to arrange the dinner on a plate and eat at a set table, but many, if not most, just dip plastic forks into foil or Styrofoam containers and collapse in front of the TV screen...
...bone-white moonscape from Massawa to the interior city of Mekele in just half an hour. The unloading crews at the airstrip are a sight to behold. "Move it, move it, go ahead forward, go ahead forward, time is passing, time is passing," chanted a group of 15 barefoot men two weeks ago as they quickly emptied a transport of 22 tons of grain contributed by the European Community. ...wonderful things about this picture is that recently I have objected to certain pictures that have dealt with the issue of voodoo, [notably] Angel Heart, which I felt was racist, both subliminally and explicitly. In August, after four straight games lost in the opponent's last at-bat, the Giants were five behind Cincinnati and facing a four-game Reds series and maybe the end. But Pitcher Mike LaCoss...
What indeed? Zurbaran was an artist of unquestioning Roman Catholic faith, whose entire career was spent devoutly illustrating the most rigid and minute dogmas of the monastic orders he worked for (Dominicans, Franciscans, shod and barefoot Mercedarians, Trinitarians, Hieronymites, Carthusians, Carmelites). Yet in no small irony he became a favorite of French anticlericals two centuries and more after his death. Even the surrealists, who hated the church on principle, liked him. Indeed there are Zurbarans whose pure literalness might strike a modern eye as surrealistic; for example, his figure of the Sicilian martyr St. Agatha daintily bearing on a platter...
