WITH mounting frustration, outsiders have sought for more than two months to make sense of portents from Peking suggesting an epic struggle for power in China. Last week China watchers from Hong Kong to Washington at last claimed to have some tangible evidence about the mysterious events. Only the barest dimensions of the conflict are discernible, but Western intelligence experts now believe that they have enough clues, including several from sources within China, to draw some dramatic conclusions...

...experience is filmed head-on carries with it a definite educational value, and some visceral impact. (The gasmask test and hand-to-hand combat training sequences are inevitable stunners). Basic Training does something well-suited to television: it presents events in all their surface complexity, with only the barest contextual or human fabric to support or explain them (thus skirting issues of interpretation). Musically, Taylor is a fusion of the three black and white mainstreams of pop: the lonely twang of country, the pithy narrative of folk and the rhythmic melancholy of blues. Beyond that, Taylor's use of elemental imagery?darkness and sunlight, references to roads traveled and untraveled. to fears spoken and left unsaid?reaches a level both of intimacy and controlled emotion rarely achieved in purely...

...shows in the past three weeks are instructive examples. Stag Movie is a flea-brained bedroom farce played in the nude. It is not without its funny moments, but the yawns are more frequent simply because Oh! Calcutta! preempted the field, and was and is the best of the barest. A rock musical, Soon, a kind of hairless Hair, lasted exactly three performances. What was wrong with it? Soon was Late...
