When an album's liner notes list some songs without a composer and titles are misspelled, you know you're dealing with a bargain-bin special. And this Patsy Cline/George Jones compilation from Allegiance Records is about as shoddy as you're likely to find. For instance, on the disc it says it was released in 1987, while on the liner it says 1984. It is also poorly mastered and fuzzy-sounding, as though made on a home recorder. But it does contain a few treasures, such as this track (as well as a beautiful rendition of the Harland Howard/Hank...

...which point it hesitated, and may now have officially taken on the look of a bargain. The index closed Monday at 10,835, and for the near term could be on its way up. Sure, oil prices loom, the euro drags, the Middle East smolders, and the word "stagflation" is on at least a few lips, but for now that's troubling the NASDAQ far more - over there they're worried about the damming effect an economic slowdown will have on the river of cash that made the techs what they were...

...getting close to a blue-light special now. Maybe. Remember, though, that bargain hunting around the March-May sell-off rewarded only a few while ravaging many. Electric utilities, oil and some financial and left-for-dead health-care stocks have done well. But that's not where the money was. Popular techland has been a disaster. Last week the NASDAQ yo-yo busted its string and fell to a new low for the year, extending a slump in the most speculative stocks and grounding the likes of Intel, Dell, Cisco and Lucent...

Talk about a hard act to follow. Mary Karr's The Liars' Club (1995) was both one of the decade's most engaging and entertaining memoirs and a phenomenal best seller in the bargain. But you don't survive a harrowing childhood like the one portrayed in that book only to become all timid and fluttery in the face of outrageous success. So here comes Cherry (Viking; 276 pages; $24.95), in which Karr picks up roughly where The Liars' Club left off and recounts her rocky journey from girlhood into full-fledged adolescence...

...bottom, don't expect the good times to return just yet. With the economic-minded fretting about the winter and spring - Slowdown? Inflation? Both? - and the policy-minded starting to think seriously about the election, every earnings report is a tea leaf and every tumble a bargain hunt. The tentative consensus from the CNBC crowd is that with trading volume running higher on the sell-off than on the recovery, this thing may indeed be a bottom, but it's a bottom to be tested and retested in the next days and weeks, to find out if it's real...
