When an album's liner notes list some songs without a composer and titles are misspelled, you know you're dealing with a bargain-bin special. And this Patsy Cline/George Jones compilation from Allegiance Records is about as shoddy as you're likely to find. For instance, on the disc it says it was released in 1987, while on the liner it says 1984. It is also poorly mastered and fuzzy-sounding, as though made on a home recorder. Talk about a hard act to follow. Mary Karr's The Liars' Club (1995) was both one of the decade's most engaging and entertaining memoirs and a phenomenal best seller in the bargain. But you don't survive a harrowing childhood like the one portrayed in that book only to become all timid and fluttery in the face of outrageous success. So here comes Cherry (Viking; 276 pages; $24.95), in which Karr picks up roughly where The Liars' Club left off and recounts her rocky journey from girlhood into full-fledged adolescence...

Both? - and the policy-minded starting to think seriously about the election, every earnings report is a tea leaf and every tumble a bargain hunt.
