Outside, all Holland was ablaze with tulips, but in one bare-walled room of The Hague's Princess Juliana Kazarne, the dominant colors were the army green of the ashtrays and the top-secret red of the wastebaskets. There were no flowers in the room for the simple reason that they afford a natural receptacle for hidden microphones. This week, as NATO's 15 Foreign Ministers gathered for their 15th spring meeting around the long, oval table in that closely guarded room, the most intimate secrets of the Western alliance were up for discussion...

PIET MONDRIAN-Frumkin, 32 East 57th. Mondrian depicted nature-before he stripped it to its bare essentials-in scenes of Dutch windmills, rivers and forests. These drawings and oils, done between 1905 and 1908, show keen insights and rhythmic vitality in a self-assured style, but offer little indication of the plastic purist he was to become (through May 23). For that, see "Mondrian, De Stijl and Their Impact," at Marlborough-Gerson, 41 East 57th, where his spatial austerity and its potential for beauty is fully realized in his own and in the works of 22 followers. And at one point his old great-aunt, who is deaf to the others, reaches out and begs Tom to "touch me, reach me...If not your hand, Tom, then whose?" There will always be someone waiting to be reached...

...last film of French Director Jacques Becker, who died shortly after completing it in 1960, Night Watch engages interest on several levels. As a straight thriller, it is taut, bone-bare, agonizingly suspenseful, and flawlessly acted by its leading players, all nonprofessionals (except Mark Michel as Gaspard). As a movie about prison life, it is authentic; La Santé's guards are not brutes, they are merely inhumanly efficient machines, trained to perform surgery on the contents of a food parcel, to count skulls in the numbered cubicles where prisoners contemplate their anonymity. As a meaningful human drama...
