...went home to Bacon County, got married, and spent the next few years trading one barren farm for another, always behind at the bank. One story especially illuminates the Crews' plight during these years: In 1936 they got a little ahead and were able to buy two cows. Early one morning, Mrs. Crews, cleaning the floor with homemade lye, happened to notice their two cows wandering towards a barrel of lead poisoning used for spraying tobacco plants. She yelled for Ray, but far out in the fields he couldn't hear her, and so she started for the cows herself...

...easy, glancing about, to tell who the participants really are. Right off the bat in the morning, a bouncy little loudmouth takes the barren stage and tells everyone to pick a partner for a game. "One of you will be a frozen yogurt, the other a banana." Fantastic! This apparently fulfills the promise that there would be group "sharing" and mass "intimacy." Still, the participants are people who, en masse, become as obedient, as malleable as a class of terrified kindergarteners. Gynecologist Patrick Steptoe and Physiologist Robert Edwards have basked in acclaim and glory since the July birth of Louise Brown, the world's first test-tube baby. But last week a shadow was cast over the Britons' triumph. Chicago's Barren Foundation, set up to promote fertility research, abruptly canceled plans to honor Steptoe on Nov. 15 with its annual award. Reason: Steptoe and Edwards have not yet published a detailed report of their work in a medical journal. The decision caused confusion among doctors and the public, and prompted at least one newspaper, the New York...

...name of the factory suburb on the outskirts of Cracow is as drab and anonymous as the upright slabs of apartments that crowd its barren hills: Nowa Huta-New Foundry. Conceived by the Polish Communist state as a counterweight to "reactionary" central Cracow, Nowa Huta is home to the giant, 35,000-employee Lenin Steelworks, one of the largest in Europe. As originally planned, the town was to have schools, shops, theaters, recreation halls and a hospital-but no church. The workers wanted one. After the anti-regime riots of 1956, they won grudging permission from the state to build...
