Berlin's ugly wall is not the only barrier that Communism's inmates try to breach. Soviet authorities are concerned at the increasing number of Soviet youths trying to sneak illegally out of Russia itself. Recently two young Russians tried to leave the country by swimming out to a foreign tanker in the Black Sea port of Batum; they were picked up by a Soviet harbor patrol boat. One was sentenced to six years in prison, the other to ten. One of the men, said Soviet officials, had been influenced by modern, Western-style poetry-"bad verse that...

...characteristic of most "liberal" whites, when confronted with a Negro, to assume either that the Negro is white, or that they themselves are Negro. But this attempt to circumvent the racial barrier by pretending that everyone stands on the same side can only increase the real distance between the races. As you have pointed out, while a Negro may call another Negro a nigger, for a white man to assume this liberty is disastrous. This barrier, this vital difference must be acknowledged if it is to be understood and destroyed. The problem of the "liberal" white man, therefore...

...familiar portly figure decked out in a black astrakhan cap and grey overcoat. It was Nikita Khrushchev all right, and he promptly proceeded to give one of his impromptu theatrical performances. Grinning broadly, he mugged for photographers, gaily waved a pudgy finger at the barbed wire and steel barrier, then ambled over for a chat with a busload of astonished Italian newsmen. Asking for "someone who speaks English" he jovially pumped the hand of the correspondents' guide, a U.S. Air Force colonel, exclaimed, "I wish you all the best in life...

Block-Busting. Both Negroes and whites acted badly in the events that led up to the barrier between Collier Heights and Cascade Heights. Negro real estate brokers used blockbusting techniques to try to buy homes in the Peyton-Utoy subdivision of Cascade Heights. They falsely told white residents that their neighbors had put their homes up for sale and conspicuously drove Negro clients through the area on Sunday to frighten white owners. A white real estate man threatened to sell his home and some lots to Negroes in order to get a higher price from white buyers in the area...

Flying Potatoes. "Wah-ah, wah-ah," shrieked the police-type klaxons that Weidner had thoughtfully installed in advance. The Communist guards obediently raised the first of three barriers. But what was a bus doing on emergency duty? Suddenly the shooting began-too late. Wagner, at 40 m.p.h., was already crashing through the second barrier 100 yards ahead, then the third, only 20 yards away...
