Reading "Beyond The Sound Barrier" about the new Miss America, Heather Whitestone, and the controversy in the deaf community over her choice to speak rather than use American Sign Language brought to mind a similar uproar. It occurred when I spoke rather than signed at the 1988 Academy Awards while presenting the Oscar for Best Actor.
