...American Idol,” judge Simon Cowell famously predicted that not only would Underwood go on to win the competition, but she would also outsell all previous “Idol” winners. The next three years made Cowell appear remarkably astute. As Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino fell by the wayside, and Kelly Clarkson grappled with artistic—and perhaps just general—confusion, Underwood’s first two albums established her as Nashville’s leading female star. Broadway is getting shrewder about courting all kids, but particularly girls. Stars from American Idol have turned up in Broadway musicals--Frenchie Davis in Rent, Diana DeGarmo in Hairspray and Fantasia Barrino in The Color Purple (since she joined the cast, the show has set a house attendance record). Never say Americans take democracy for granted. After more than 65 million votes poured in--more than half the number cast in the 2000 presidential election--FANTASIA BARRINO, a single mom from High Point, N.C., was crowned the third American Idol. It was a controversial season in which guest judge Elton John cried racism, frantic voters decried the jammed phone lines and the state of Hawaii just plain cried for its third-place finisher. Barrino, 19, a bluesy belter who had been an early favorite, beat Diana DeGarmo, 16, by 1.3 million votes in the finale. It was, aptly...
