Barber's Boy. Jimmy was born Feb. 10, 1893, on Manhattan's swarming Lower East Side, the youngest of three boys and a girl. His mother was a Neapolitan, and gave Jimmy her nose. His father, Barthelmeo was a French-Italian barber. As his father's helper, Jimmy lathered the faces of many a Tammany politician. He quit school around the seventh grade, ran errands, worked as a glasswasher, photo-engraver, took piano lessons.
