...Only the Russians could tell how successful their two latest Venus shots had been and how much information had been gathered about the enigmatic planet. Whatever they learned, the Soviets undoubtedly left some mark on Venus. On board the Venus 5 capsule, Tass reported, was a marker bearing a bas-relief of Lenin and the Soviet coat of arms...
...austere CIA headquarters, a bas-relief plaque with Allen Dulles' likeness bears the inscription: "His Monument Is Around Us." It has been 40 years since Secretary of State Henry Stimson disbanded the only U.S. code-breaking operation then in existence with the scornful remark, "Gentlemen do not read each other's mail." Allen Dulles was a gentleman, but he also had a bent for reading other people's mail that was ingenious and invaluable...
...constitution, power has been divided more or less equally among playwright, actor and director. Brook has altered that drastically. He has lowered the visibility of the actor, by making him much more of a group figure, an inter-actor-the difference, as it were, between Greek sculpture and Egyptian bas-relief. A likely conclusion: the Shardanes built the menhirs. Scratching the Surface. Elementary but wrong, decided Grosjean. Why would the Shardanes cut up their own monuments...
Perfect Satyr. Erected between 50 and 69 A.D., the monument was discovered by the Gens brothers in 1965 beneath the shop basement. Exposing a large limestone block, they dug around it and discovered the perfectly preserved figure of a satyr chiseled in bas-relief on one side. Beneath the first block, they found a second, also carved. They called officials of Cologne's Roman-Germanic museum, who immediately bought the stones for $2,000 but explained that archaeological teams could not be spared at the moment to in vestigate the site. In the meantime, the museum officials, who have...
