Left to Die. Around 11 a.m., Whitman boldly breezed into a parking spot reserved for university officials, near the main administration and library building at the base of the tower. Dressed in tennis sneakers, blue jeans and a pale polo shirt, he wheeled the loaded dolly toward an elevator, gave passersby the impression that he was a maintenance man. The elevator stops at the 27th floor; Whitman lugged his bizarre cargo up three flights of steps to the 30th floor. Rising Gloom. With 60% of the nation's commercial air transport grounded, problems of all kinds continued to grow. Mail deliveries that normally move by air were slowed; shipments of everything from electronic equipment to exotic flowers were delayed for lack of air cargo space. Businessmen hitched...
Another intensive search located the wreckage of a high-altitude U-2 reconnaissance plane that disappeared after leaving Louisiana's Barksdale Air Force Base, presumably on a surveillance mission over Cuba. The Pentagon said that the pilot, Captain Robert D. Hickman, 32, had apparently lost consciousness over the Caribbean, and that the U-2 had probably been guided by its automatic pilot until it ran out of fuel. Hickman's body was found in the debris on a rugged plateau in west-central Bolivia...
...Pampanga has fallen under Communist control, and that nearly half of the area's 22 mayors are either Communists or Communist sympathizers. If these figures are somewhat high, Marcos himself puts Huk strength at 250 hard-core terrorists, 250 to 500 part-time terrorists, and a "mass base" of perhaps 27,000 people, who, out of fear or sympathy, supply them with food, information and protection...
