...Governor, he holds a deep conservatism that is both economic and social. Sununu helped turn around Bush's flagging campaign during the New Hampshire primary, when he urged the Vice President to emphasize his "no new taxes" pledge. The Governor then served as the campaign's top Dukakis basher, shadowing his Massachusetts counterpart and ridiculing him. Some Bush aides are concerned that the combative Sununu may run roughshod over Washington's more swollen and tender egos. Sununu, however, pledged to work warmly with Congress, purring with a Cheshire smile, "I'm a pussycat...
...networks get themselves into such a mess? To a great extent, they are victims of a changing TV universe. "The networks are not doing anything wrong," says Ted Turner, the veteran network basher who tried to take over CBS three years ago. "It's like AM radio. They weren't doing anything wrong either, but FM radio was better." Years of colossal audiences and soaring ad revenues, however, bred complacency. This skewed perspective undoubtedly highlights Lennon at his absolute worst. Adrift, he was a very bad piece of work: a drunken, heroin-addicted woman basher and room wrecker who was catatonically depressed and dependent on his manipulative wife. At the same time, Goldman's emphasis dovetails nicely with the revised version of his own life that Lennon peddled during his last years. He disparaged the Beatles and his role in their success. He told one interviewer: "We sold out, you know. The music was dead before we even went on the theater tour of Britain." Goldman obediently parrots this view...
...apparent detachment, Reagan apparently favors a low-profile National Security Adviser. None of his previous appointees (Richard Allen, William Clark, Robert McFarlane) was a forceful head basher, eager to humble a department chief, as Kissinger did with Secretary of State William Rogers. Unfortunately for Poindexter, however, the NSC post is still widely considered a power center with such multiple responsibilities as massaging, if not coercing the departments, dealing with key legislators on critical issues and helping to sell and explain White House policy through press contacts. Not surprisingly, the reluctant Poindexter has been criticized for failing to perform these tasks...
Unfortunately, the scale and character of protest deterred Meese from any kind of public appearance and will be construed by Reagan Administration officials and others as a direct insult to Meese. Right or wrong, the whole affair has put the K-School in the role of administration-basher with no graceful "out" available for Dean Graham T. Allison '62 or anyone else...
