...psychology professor at Stanford. "[You have to teach them that] they are in charge of their intellectual growth." Over the past couple of years, Dweck has helped run an experimental workshop with New York City public school seventh-graders to do just that. Dubbed Brainology, the unorthodox approach uses basic neuroscience to teach kids how the brain works and how it can continue to develop throughout life. "The message is that everything is within the kids' control, that their intelligence is malleable," says Lisa Blackwell, a research scientist at Columbia University who has worked with Dweck to develop...
...efforts to lower the bar with her nomination should not invite praise for Alito for being something more than a tail-wagging Bush crony.Alito is the wrong man for the job because he is a conservative ideologue. We fear that, given the chance, he would overturn basic legal protections and reshape the scope of the U.S. government. Several of Alito’s past opinions lead us to this conclusion. The most incendiary—although not most extreme—example of Alito’s radicalism is his dissent in the 1991 abortion rights case, Planned Parenthood of Southeastern...

One can only hope Spielberg's film kindles interest in educating our children about the worst crime in modern history. Other recent surveys by the American Jewish Committee show that one-third of the American people find it ''possible'' the Holocaust never took place. Our surveys in France and Britain, by contrast, show that such potential ''Holocaust deniers'' make up only 6% of the French population...
...glibly glowing comment about a Henry James novel referenced in “The Line of Beauty,” Hollinghurst is quick to remember The Master’s insufferable minor characters. With all these small scenes of confusion and clarification, Hollinghurst’s firm denial of a basic transatlantic divide between American and British approaches to literature may come as a surprise. There is no such thing as a British writing style that differs systemically from American counterparts, he argues. Oddly, though, he finds no contradiction in referring to “gay literature” and discussing...
