Arranna's dream of a free Basqueland was temporarily realized when the Spanish government approved Basque autonomy following a 1933 plebiscite in the Basque country. Autonomy had carried 459,255 votes out of a possible 490,157 in the balloting. The Spanish government formally declared Basque independence in Guernica and the ceremonies were held under a tree which was to become the symbol of Basque freedom.
