Like many jazz pianists, Pennsylvania-born Alex Kallao uses string bass and drums to give his performance more body and bounce. His arrangements (of such standards as Tea for Two and Bewitched) usually begin with gentle but full-bodied harmonizations of the tune. Then, grinning toward the crowd, he "takes off" for a chorus or two of swift-moving improvisations that feature unerring cascades of notes in the right hand and ear-teasing harmonic changes beneath. His style is not yet so distinctive that a listener could identify him blindfolded, but his razzle-dazzle endings get him a big hand...

...Bright Sands is studded with set pieces that will tickle all but misanthropes: Captain Cobb's annual auction of stolen articles, his drunken acceptance of the prize for the season's largest striped bass (illegitimately come by), his bogus historical lecture inspired by the finding of a complete skeleton. But Author Taylor's affection for Cape Cod and its people sometimes transcends comic writing, and his description of an offshore rescue by the local Coast Guard men during a hurricane is a model of exact reporting. The Bright Sands takes few fictional liberties with its natural setting...
...Lingo. Working last week with his own quartet (trumpet, piano, bass, drums) in a Los Angeles jazz joint called Zardi's, Chet kept his tempos up, his rhythm hard-swinging. His program consisted mostly of cool-jazz originals such as Maid in Mexico and Soft Shoe, but also included such rich-chorded pop tunes as Funny Valentine and All the Things You Are. Trumpeter Baker stood with his body motionless, his ears bent for the counterpoint of his sidemen, his eyes tiredly closed...
