...like most WB shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer keeps a close eye on its soundtrack and has now culled 17 choice songs for an official Buffy album. The surprise is that it's fairly cohesive and quite good, with songs featuring solid bass, wicked guitar and plenty of longing. ...comprising lots of rapping, a little shouting and even less actual singing, the music was refreshingly, well, musical. There were recognizable melodies and sinuous bass-lines, beats to groove to and even a little harmony. Even better, the songs were pretty innovative and incredibly upbeat. This was the most aggressively happy hip-hop ever, with song titles like "Feelin' Alright" and "Beautiful Day?" Len also has a penchant for the robotic-voice vocoder effect, and they made use of it several times, invoking memories of New Wave...
...often, the talents of Wooten are dwarfed by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, for whom he plays bass. (Bela Fleck themselves are all too often merely the opener for bands such as the Dave Matthews Band.) This solo outing reaffirmed his position as the most prolific and talented bassist since Jacko Pastore. The ambience of The House of Blues, with its bas-reliefs of Blues and Jazz greats, enhanced the funky bass-lines and fostered the dialogue between Wooten, the band and his audience.
