Meet Coldplay--singer Chris Martin, 23; guitarist Jonny Buckland, 23; bassist Guy Berryman, 22; and drummer Will Champion, 22--four fresh-scrubbed British lads who teamed up three years ago at University College London. The band's first full-length album, Parachutes (Parlophone), made its debut last May at the top of the British charts, went on to sell more than 2 million copies, and is now available in the U.S. on the Nettwerk America label. It shared the warbling vocals and slow, stately beat of Radiohead's more conservative efforts, and comparisons between the two bands ran amuck...

From his early days in Miles Davis' quintet to his groundbreaking work with the rap trio A Tribe Called Quest, Ron Carter is the rare bassist who propels music as much with his ideas as his skills. On this, his first album-length experiment with Latin jazz, Carter realizes that others have come before him, so rather than beat the congas to a pulp, his expert quartet, featuring ace percussionist Steve Kroon, flirts with them. O'Reagan's version of Charlie Rich's "Life Has Its Little Ups and Downs" was an excellent, soulful showcase...

...couple Miller met in a trailer park who were still wild about denture-free whoopie. A libidinous "Learn to Belly Dance" in honor of their appearance at the Middle East probably recalled the band's past performances at strip clubs-blond bouffant wig-wearing Mary Huff, the group's bassist, had to turn down more than a few requests to serve as a private tutor...

...mediocre band to serve as a foil for his spectacular extemporaneous flights. The same cannot be said of his present band. In pianist Stephen Scott and trombonist Clifton Anderson, Rollins has two tremendous talents with which to share feature time. Percussionist Victor See-Yuen, drummer Perry Wilson and bassist Bob Cranshaw (an intermitent member of Rollins' bands for 40 years) keep rock-solid time and provide the springboard for the virtuosic solos of the three leads...
