Today R.E.M. finds itself at a crossroads. The band's tour in support of its last album, Monster, was problem-ridden: drummer Bill Berry suffered an aneurysm (he has since recovered), bassist Mike Mills underwent surgery for an intestinal problem, and Stipe developed a hernia. So far, no tour has been planned for New Adventures in Hi-Fi. The album is also R.E.M.'s last under its current deal with Warner Bros., setting the band free to renegotiate, N.B.A.-style, for a megacontract...

Every few years someone says ska will be the next big thing in music. Maybe it's wishful thinking. After all, ska, a kinetic forerunner to reggae, with infectious dance beats and lively horn bursts, is appealing. But even Tony Kanal, bassist for the ska-tinged pop band No Doubt, says ska isn't about to "take over the country." Still, it may take over a few CD players...
While Weir and Hart tour, former Dead bassist Phil Lesh is mixing a three-CD album of concerts taped in 1990. Lesh also says there are 12 new Dead songs, available in either rehearsal or incomplete studio versions, which may be released soon. A reunion of the remaining members is always a possibility.
