Then Ford unaccountably doubles back on the trail. The marshal, it develops, is no altar vaulter; he is four-fifths of a bastard, going on five. Comanches have taken dozens of white captives, and the commandant wants Stewart to get them back. The request is straight out of the last thousand horse movies, but Stewart's answer is new: hell no. The commandant shudders; he has done westerns before, and this is not the way the scene is supposed to go. But he asks, disbelievingly, would money change Stewart's mind? What is remarkable is that Writer Kopit, after using up so much creative energy on his titles, had something left over for the plays themselves. Oh Dad, Poor Dad, described in undergraduate fashion by the playwright himself as "a pseudoclassical tragifarce in a bastard French tradition." shows influences in every scene-from strong, cynical gusts of Jean Anouilh, Marcel Ayme and Jean Giraudoux down to weak, cynical undertones of Elizabeth Taylor: "He's dead. He lives in the home of Theseus and Theseus' young bride Phaedra. An outdoors he-man sort, Hippolytus neglects the service of Aphrodite, goddess of love. She is rebuffed in her advances, and in revenge tells Theseus that the boy has made attempts on her virtue. Theseus prays...
