Jack Nicholson's best performance in the past five years? With all due respect to Batman and The Witches of Eastwick, it just may be a half-hour stint Nicholson did for, of all things, a children's video. He is narrator of The Elephant's Child, an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's whimsical story about how the elephant got its trunk. Backed by the music of Bobby McFerrin, Nicholson gives a droll, spirited reading, wrapping his tongue around Kipling's sensuous words -- "the great, gray-green, greasy Lim-po-po River" -- like a gourmet savoring oysters...
...Peters' way with a checkbook is no less legendary in Hollywood than are his films (Batman, Rain Man). Two years ago, when Columbia's new owner, Sony, hired Peters and partner Peter Guber to head the studio, the pair's deliriously lucrative deal ($200 million for their production company alone) set a Hollywood record. Soon the partners were spending money as fast as the Treasury could print it: $40 million for Warren Beatty's Bugsy, $50 million for Steven Spielberg's Hook. Peters, 44, also became known for such extravagances as spending $80,000 on a colleague's surprise party...

No matter how dark and violent Van Kipnis and Eggar choose to make the story, stylized fight choreography will always evoke memories of Robin kapowing the Riddler in the old Batman series. And the war council in Doc's drug store seems quaint when compared with the drive-by shootings and crack dens of today...
...Miller-Boyett comedy stylebook, no joke is too broad, no character too outlandish, no plot twist too cloying. When a four-year-old in Full House is told she can be a batboy on the Little League team, you can bet she'll come downstairs wearing a Batman costume (and get a big laugh for it). On the morning of his wedding day, one of the three dads sneaks off to go skydiving (why not?). He gets stuck in a tree, falls into a truckload of tomatoes and arrives hours late for the awww-inspiring ceremony. A better response...
...Hoffman, Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. The film's top talent will get a lavish 40% of the gross revenues. To earn a nickel for the studio, Hook will have to become one of the year's highest- grossing films. But the new management team at Columbia, led by Batman producers Jon Peters and Peter Guber, is clearly confident. The company bought two French-made Falcon jets last year, even before the duo made their first movie...
