Head of the BBC's music department, Pianist Clock wields an administrative baton over BBC's 13 orchestras (including four symphonies), employs a quarter of all the permanently employed musicians in Britain, spends more than $3,000,000 a year on music. In his small, square office at the BBC's music headquarters in London, Clock tirelessly studies scores and magnetic tapes as he tries to keep track of the 12,000 compositions played annually on the BBC's 3,000 serious music programs. Clock's own tastes lean to the modern, but a typical...

...Scala, under the baton of U.S. Conductor Thomas Schippers, La Atlantida proved to be a grandiose but admirably controlled work that made its points with much of the concision that Falla displayed in such earlier compositions as The Three-Cornered Hat. Where Falla departed from his familiar style was in the sparing use of folk material and in the skillful use of a descriptive chorus. Germany and Lone Star." Along with booming payrolls. Lone Star sponsored baton-twirling classes for girls, baseball clinics for boys, professional workshops for teachers and ministers. Employees were married and buried from a chapel at the plant...

Fire in the Ashes. Like many another Texas tycoon. Germany is politically an ultraconservative and an implacable enemy of unions. His battles against the United Steelworkers Union undid most of the good will from baseball and baton twirling. In 1957 Lone Star was hit by a 23-day strike. While Germany and 770 workers slept, ate and poured steel inside, 2,600 other employees-summarily fired by Germany-picketed outside. Pipelines were cut, bombs thrown, and nonstrikers attacked until the Texas Rangers had to be called in to end the violence. Since then, labor relations have been at least quiet...

Conductor Franz Waxman raised his baton, and the orchestra sailed into the opening bars of Stravinsky's piano concerto. Then he gave the nod for the first piano passage, and the piano came right in on cue. The audience at last week's International Music Festival in Los Angeles did 2,000 double takes: though the piano bench was vacant, the music was coming out loud and clear...
