...years ago. His father was a bishop of the Anglican Church, who carted Bernard off to Tasmania when he was an infant and proposed that Bernard follow in his churchly steps. Bernard preferred to be a soldier. He went to Sandhurst, served in World War I, later commanded a battalion of Royal Fusiliers during the Sinn Fein trouble. But he did not enjoy that.
