Eighty-nine won her first game yesterday, defeating eighty-six by a score of 7 to 4. The freshmen showed a marked improvement in their fielding, but were weak at the bat. '86 lost through poor fielding. Downer was struck on the arm by a pitched ball in the fifth inning, and his place was taken by Weaver. The best playing was done by Hurley and Clark. Bruner did good work for '86. McPherson made a pretty throw from centre field to the plate, shutting out a run. The score...

...throng of supporters amused themselves with viewing the sights of the town until lunch was served at twelve o'clock. Then the clouds began to come up, and at the time game was called, at two o'clock, the weather was very threatening. Amherst went first to the bat, and scored three runs in the first inning. Of course with an entirely new nine it is impossible to make any surmises as to what showing will be made against the old nines of Harvard and Princeton. The team which will cross bats with Harvard in the first game will probably be as follows: Stagg, '88, p.; Dann, '88 S. L., c.; Marsh, '86 S., 1b.; Stewart, '86, 2b.; Cross, T. S., 3b.; Noyes, '89, s. s.; Brigham, '87, l. f.; Bremner, '86, c. f.; Sheppard, '87, r. f. Stewart, captain, covered first last year...

Smith's pitching was effective, while the number of assists he made was rather unusual. For the home nine White led at the bat, making about half the hits made by his side. The following is the score; its closeness is due, for the greater part, to the poor grounds...

Brown played miserably in the field, and was pitiably weak at the bat. The notable exception to the poor play of Brown was Clarke. He supported Gunderson as well as could be desired, and threw to bases beautifully, catching three Harvard men napping. Harvard played a good game with the exception of the third inning, when they went badly to pieces. Smith pitched a good game, and Henshaw caught him finely, and threw to bases well. He also led the nine in batting with an average of 1.000, making a hit for every time at bat. The features...
