...last Monday. The regular diamond was too soft for use, but a temporary one was laid out in the outfield. Link, Chaplin, and Thompson appeared to be the most likely first-string men on the pitching staff, and Claire, Dowd, and Rutherford, promising substitutes. Douglas showed best behind the bat, while Purves, Gordon, and Currie proved such able seconds, that it is considered possible that Driggs may be used at short or in the outfield instead of at backstop...

...strong line-up in the field, Harold Janvrin of the Red Sox covering the short field, Leo Dowd, formerly with the Yankees on first base, and Billy Connolly of the Washington Club on third. H. E. Reeves '12, who has coached the last three Freshman teams, was behind the bat. The fielding feature of the game was a long throw by Wyche nipping Connolly who was trying to go from first to third on a single to right field...

Greatest among the causes of the nine's success is its power at the bat. At present there are four men hitting over .360, while the team as a whole has an average of .242. The pitching has been largely a one-man affair, for Mahan has borne the brunt of all the big games. However, Whitney's no-hit game against Williams has shown that he may be depended upon...

Comparing the nines individually, the University has a slight advantage. On fielding the two teams are about on a par, but at the bat the University is a decided superior. Easton, in right field, is probably as good a man as Gannett in the field, but his hitting has been noticeably inferior. Yale will doubtless miss Kranes in that position. Captain Middle Brooke, in centre, is one of Yale's best batsmen, surest fielders, and fastest base-winners, but with the exception of the lost department it is doubtful whether he excells Frye. He certainly is not as strong...

...make a comparison, although the latter has had the benefit of greater experience. Behind the plate will be found two catchers of marked ability. Both Hunter and Harte are men who have made creditable records; Hunter has the better throwing arm while Harte has the better reputation at the bat. In general, the University probably has a slight edge on the battery; has an infield which may not field as well but which should do better at the bat; and has a trio of outfielders who as a whole excell the Yale men by reason of their records as hitters...
