...pitchers, Coburn and McDonald appear to be the best, although each of them can easily improve. Milne and Jacques are the best behind the bat, and are both doing good work. Lewis is the only man who has shown any steadiness at first base, the other men seeming to lack experience in that position. For second base, Keene and Putnam are about equally matched, and each is doing excellent work, although Putnam is weaker at the bat. At shortstop, Wright, Coolidge and Gilles are fairly accurate and cover a good deal of ground. Lancey and Rowley are doing well...
...sixty men came out for baseball practice yesterday. The preliminary work was much the same as that of the day before, but after a little warming up the men were divided into different nines. Three two-inning games were played. The play was sharp and spirited, and while the batting was very weak, the fielding was excellent. Of the pitchers, P. N. Coburn '02, made the best showing. He had speed and very fair control, striking out men in every inning which he pitched. Of the new men, F. Jacques '03, caught well behind the bat, and made a number...

By his steadiness Hayes showed himself capable of consistently good work, and altogether the result augurs well...
Saturday's baseball victory coming when the chances against Yale on the 23d are being seriously considered is on the whole decidedly reassuring. Although practically ineffective at the bat, the nine showed themselves capable of snappy and aggressive play in the field against a strong opponent, and Hayes's good form was in a high degree encouraging. This year's experience has certainly shown how a wild and ineffective pitcher demoralizes the men back of him, and what a steadying influence has one who inspires his team with confidence. If Hayes can keep his form, there will then be little...
