Matters started off with a rush when, in the first inning, McQuiggan, the visitors opening batter, hit cleanly to first Clune advanced him to second on a sacrifice and Shea's hit brought him home. Shea himself was advanced to second on an error by short-stop and to third by Massey's hit. He was caught, however, trying to steal home and Cummings struck out, retiring the side...

Wood landed hard on the next ball, but Burgess made a spectacular catch that brought the first out. Cameron, the next batter, swung viciously and rapped out a liner between left and center which gave him ample time to come home before the ball was relayed in. Two more singles and a pass filled the bases...
