...really. The latest bout of congressional querulousness was partly inspired by disappointing news from the Salvadoran battlefront. In the town of Suchitoto (pop. about 11,000), 27 miles from the capital of San Salvador, hundreds of guerrilla members of the Faribundo Marti National Liberation Front (F.M.L.N.) last week were continuing a prolonged attack against a garrison of 150 to 200 national guardsmen and police. All access roads to the town were cut off. Within the besieged area, food, medicines and potable water were growing scarce, and civilian refugees could escape from the fighting only by rowboat across a nearby reservoir...
There are many Senators on both sides of the aisle who are critical of the Administration's foreign policy, but it was clear from the beginning that no one had any serious intention of blocking the nomination. In trying to cope with two battlefront confrontations in the Middle East, a clash with European allies on economic policy and an uncertain but distinctly cool relationship with the Soviet Union, the President urgently needs all the professional help...
...resurgence in fighting suggests that the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), the umbrella organization that links El Salvador's five different guerrilla groups, has replenished its arms supplies and has returned to the battlefront more organized and determined than ever. Beginning in 1930, Thomas combined the roles of globetrotter and radio network broadcaster with élan and energy. He hunted tigers in India, covered virtually every battlefront in World War II, and in 1949 met with the Dalai Lama in Tibet. Thomas began a new radio show in 1980 called The Best Years, with features on such notable senior citizens as Bob Hope and Picasso. Said Thomas: "The best years have been all of my years...
Despite all this lethal ingenuity, the only really good news from the bug battlefront is that most healthy trees can survive two or three onslaughts. Indeed, foresters like to point out that the moths often strengthen the woodland by eliminating sickly specimens. But such Darwinian reassurances are little comfort to suburbanites worried about a favorite elm or oak. By now, about all they can do is keep the tree as healthy as possible -faithful watering and feeding help -gather up and destroy every clutch of moth eggs in sight, and wait until next year. -By Frederic Golden.
