...pundits calling for full disclosure. After all, said Orrin Hatch on "Meet the Press," the American people are a forgiving bunch, so if George W. Bush has anything to tell us about past cocaine use he should "just answer the darn question and get rid of it." Gary Bauer, Dan Quayle and Tom Daschle also dutifully hit the shows to push for a tell-all. One exception: James Carville, who argues in TIME this week that once you start answering these questions there's no way to get out of it alive: "Because once you start answering, you're never...

Republican presidential hopeful Gary Bauer has a secret weapon against his rivals. Many of his supporters have been circulating a daily prayer regimen for a "prayerful pursuit of the presidency." Each invocation is targeted at a special challenge facing a long-shot aspirant, from the banal (travel efficiency) to the sublime (on Aug. 24, supporters are asked to fast "to seek God?s will for Gary"). For Lamar Alexander, who?s down to the change in his couch after concentrating on the Hawkeye State, a good showing could be a reprieve from bankruptcy, and a poor one likely a death blow. John McCain, meanwhile, skipped the event completely, calling it a "scam," and in the run-up to the vote...

Given that history, it's no surprise that conservative candidate Gary Bauer has already declared his support for Taiwanese independence. But don't expect the same from George W. Bush. The Texas Governor has stayed clear of dramatic policy shifts on Taiwan, and last week he issued a statement reiterating his adherence to the U.S.'s one-China formula. "This isn't the kind of policy you can change on the stump," says an aide. That advice was evidently making the rounds. Republican John McCain and Democrats Al Gore and Bill Bradley remained committed to a Beijing-focused policy...
