...Ellsworth, one neighbor counting on another. Ellsworth is the shire town of Hancock County, some two-thirds up the Maine coast, and gateway to the summer resorts of Bar Harbor. For more than 200 years, the town has hugged the Union River, which spills out into Union River Bay and eventually the bold Atlantic. The town was named for Oliver Ellsworth, an early Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Folks here are friendly. They can't help themselves. But Down Easters draw a line between outsiders -- "people from away" -- and locals. You can be born in Hancock County and still...

What is lost when heroes vanish? Henry David Thoreau (a man who would have been at home in 1968) wrote an enigmatic throwaway line in Walden: "I long ago lost a hound, a bay horse and a turtle dove, and am still on their $ trail." The words, vaguely allegorical and haunting, have something in common with Paul Simon's "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" The novel's principal setting is Howard Beach, a working-class section of the borough of Queens, described a bit too graphically by Breslin as a "white finger of land that sticks into Jamaica Bay by Kennedy Airport." Across a field of tall bulrushes is East New York, a Third World of crime, drugs and hunger...

Fearful that the bell ringers will set a precedent for other solicitors, up to half the shopping malls in California and Nevada have barred them. In protest, parishioners from nearly 100 churches in the Bay Area are boycotting some of the malls. A few owners have relented and allowed the kettles near the entrance of their stores. Nevertheless, since the kettles collect an average of $2,000 each during the holidays, the ban may cost the charity as much as half a million dollars this season...

Built around 1907, the Tudor-Gothic mansion was a fine example of careful stonework and superbly finished interiors, set down on a luxuriant plot of waterfront lawn on Jamaica Bay. It began as a residence for Henry Heinschiemer, an eccentric New York banker whose security system included a sign that read, GENTLE STRANGER TURN BACK. When the age of grand living had passed it by, the big home became a hospital for joint diseases, then a private school for retarded children and later a rabbinical school. Now it is a bag lady of a building. A fire has destroyed much...
