We were flying over an exquisite but weird landscape, that has been turned into hundreds of miles of waterlogged marshland by the monsoons. Returning to his native Australia last month, our art critic, Robert Hughes, began shooting a TV series titled Beyond the Fatal Shore for PBS, the BBC and Australia's ABC network. Along the way, Bob planned a series of letters/diaries to a close friend in New York City, chronicling his travels and observations. This account is the only one he completed before being seriously injured in a car crash, reported in our June 14 issue. Happily, Bob was to be released from intensive care this week and is making good progress on his recovery...

Orgazmo, which was written before South Park, they say is funny if thought of as a guerrilla film to be shown at Sundance to annoy local Mormons. The Down syndrome tape, which was recently purchased by the BBC, is funny, they say, not because of the newscasters but because of the uncomfortable reactions people have when dealing with the disabled. And the dancing penises? It's just that they still think dancing penises are funny...
