...Reporters with binoculars can see just as much from the beach as they can inside the base. If we could have them inside, we could give them the straight dope on just how the firing went, and stop them guessing. Their guesses are pretty wild sometimes, and what comes out in the papers is apt to be more damaging to security than the truth. A LIFE photographer [Stan Wayman] awhile back zeroed in so close on an Atlas you could almost see the rivets on it. If we had photographers on the base, they could develop their film right here...

Kitchen TV. Builders this week put the fimsaing graces on the 301-room DuPont-Tarlton in downtown Miami. To the north, at Bal Harbour, the 162-room Beau Rivage was about ready to open. Nearing December openings along the seven-mile Miami Beach strip were two 14-story towers-the 538-room Deauville and the 620-room Carillon. Florida led the other areas combined...

...downtown San Francisco and all along the Bohemian strip known as North Beach, other poets and hipsters were gigging together to the raucous applause of the city's beard-and-sandal set. The poetry was usually poor and the jazz was worse, but nobody seemed to care. Record business was being done by dim little jazz spots such as the Sail'N and the Black Hawk-the Taj Mahal of West Coast jazz, where Dave Brubeck blew himself to fame. And at the Tin Angel, on the waterfront, Trumpeter Dick Mills and his combo were playing with...
