Usage:

After picking up some bruises, jail time and a criminal record during the late '60s war protests, I cite Matthew 7:3: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" At least the Russians aren't told they have the right of protest...

Trees and Clouds. All of which, to round-homers, is like discussing Chartres in terms of beam load. They speak lyrically of the feeling of spaciousness, of an almost mystical airiness induced by living under a skylight. A Los Angeles dome-ophile, sounding like Gerard Manley Hopkins, talks of skylights filled with "towering trees and billowing clouds dashed with birds in flight." Ken Niboli, a California real estate broker who lives and works in separate domes, puts the case even more compellingly. "I feel," he says, "like I'm always on vacation...

...first closeup view of Halley's comet in 1986. Another group at J.P.L. is working on the design of a spaceship that would be propelled by an ion engine; a small, continuous amount of thrust would be provided by the engine's ejecting ions produced when a beam of electrons (generated by electric current from solar cells) is sent through vaporized mercury. Such a low-thrust ion engine could, like the sunjammer's sail, maneuver a ship to a rendezvous with the comet. NASA is scheduled to decide next August which craft, if either, will make...

Promising Results. To view the hologram is easy. A beam from a helium-neon laser is passed through one lens, which spreads it to cover the entire plate, through the plate itself and then through another lens, which acts as an optical computer and converts the spots into a coherent picture (see diagram). The result is an image showing the arrangement of atoms in one plane of the crystal. This image can be combined with images from other sections to give a three-dimensional view of the crystal's entire atomic structure. Says Stroke: "In the past...

Like grizzled combat veterans, the survivors of the first day's run clustered last week at the bar in an Alexandria, Minn., lodge. Belting down tumblers of Jim Beam and Pabst, they compared horror stories: a burnt-out piston, a broken ski, a torn suspension, a collision with a tree. Their bright thermal suits were splotched with oil, eyes were red from fatigue, and windburned faces were scratched from encounters with barbed wire and flying stones. Some hobbled, others seemed permanently hunched from their battle. The weary combatants had just completed the opening day of one of sport...
