Albert Maysles freely admits that the film is intended to bear implications for America, but there's something slightly dishonest about the project. Door-to-door salesmen and their customers are among the most disenfranchised people in the country. (Perhaps the only sort of alienation that can match that of men who will take to the road to sell bibles and themselves is the alienation of people who will allow them into their living rooms and listen to their spiels, if only to hear a human voice.) They have hired Anne Edwards, 49, to write "a deep, rich and complex novel" from which the screenplay will be adapted (the novel will be published in paperback at the same time the movie comes out).
