...American national interest. Aside from its work in fighting world hunger and keeping the peace in embattled nations, the United Nations best serves as a forum for international discussion. The Reagan Administration found it very profitable to use the United Nations in this context in bringing world opinion to bear upon the Soviet Union for its disregard of civilized standards in destroying the Korean passenger plane. By perverting the special relationship we have with the United Nations, Reagan only sets back U.S. interests. In other words, we undermine what we are seeking, which currently is a clear indictment...
...last week, Tylenol had regained more than 80% of the market share it held before the still unsolved poisonings. "It's a miracle, pure and simple," said Joseph Riccardo of the Bear, Stearns investment banking firm. "The consensus among shrewd advertising executives on Madison Avenue was that the brand name would never recover." Indeed, after the deaths the nonaspirin drug's share of the $1.2 billion painkiller market fell from 35% to 7%. Between 1972 and 1981, the percentage of scores in the 600 to 800 range has declined. For verbal scores, the decline has been from 11.4% to 7%. For math scores, it has been from 17.8% to 5%. Instead of trying to establish a higher maximum standard, our educational system is directed solely toward raising the minimum--an emphasis the back-to-basic drive will only underscore...
...Time Inc. As befitted the daughter of prominent socialists (her father was Michael Zametkin, first editor of the Jewish Daily Forward), she flung herself into liberal causes. In a bold step for the 1930s, she adopted a son despite her single status. Bolder still, she went on to bear a son in secret without notifying the father; then, for the sake of appearances and the other child, she contrived to go through the motions of adopting the second...
