...seen a movie version of Phantom, although few have read Gaston Leroux's turgid 1910 thriller about the hideously misshapen genius who constitutes himself the shadow ruler of the Paris Opera House and, upon becoming infatuated with a chorine, maneuvers her career from afar. The beauty-and-the- beast theme and subterranean wonderland setting echo the myths of Persephone, Pygmalion and Faust and also contemporarily embrace Freudian metaphors of sexual awakening. The Broadway launch has been boosted by publicity about Phantom in London, where, since its debut in October 1986, virtually the only way to get in on short notice...
...problem in some circles, although perhaps not all elderly people are quite so "dried-out," crotchety, and inept at driving as those we find in Mr. Morris's hackneyed portrayal. My own Jewish grandparents, who live in Fort Lauderdale, the very belly of Mr. Morris's beast, are actually quite capable drivers and, strangely enough, have even shown signs of outright altruism and intellect. This floor of the exhibit is dominated by bizarre and grotesque "fairy-tale scenes" in which Sherman creates her fullest narratives, single images which bring forth a dream or fantasy. These disturbing images feature Sherman as a variety of different characters, including an Arabian prince, a deformed pig-like beast and a drowned corpse. Set in an eerie and frightening landscape of rocks and gel lighting, these fairy tales jump from Sherman's imagination into...
