...Engler's beast-to-beauty story began in 1990, when he defeated Democratic incumbent James Blanchard by a margin of less than 1%. Engler was not particularly popular, but he promised to dig a strapped Michigan out of a $1.8 billion deficit without raising taxes. He lost no time starting. Half a year after his election, he shocked observers by eliminating Michigan's general-assistance program for the state's 83,000 childless, able-bodied poor. Then he moved on to civil servants, cutting 20 boards and commissions and 5,000 state jobs...
...scene, Travis's cab emerges on to the screen from a Dantean burst of steam like a metallic beast as Bernard Herrman's eerie score beats to a crescendo. A close-up of Travis's wide-open eyes reflects the gaudy neon lights of 42nd Street porn shops, as he absorbs the world about him for a fare. At times, his passivity seems to reappear in his actions. Travis sees the "pow-pow" finger motion of a fellow cabbie and imitates it later--in a drastically different context, perhaps suggesting how Travis is shaped by the world around...
...good deal of their music has gangsta-rap aggressiveness (in The Beast, for example, they decry police brutality), but the Fugees deliver a very different message from gangsta rappers, steering clear of boastful misogyny and empty-headed machismo. "I'm not saying...
...from the eaves: wild ice stalactites, dragon's teeth. I peer through them to see the world transformed to abstract whiteout. Little dervish snow tornadoes twirl across the blank. The car is out there somewhere, represented by a subtle bump in the snowfield. The old Jeep truck, a larger beast, is up to its door handles, like a sinking remnant: dinosaur yielding to ice age. The town's behemoth snowplow passes on the road, dome light twirling, and casts aside a frozen doe that now lies, neck broken, upon the roadside snowbank, soon to vanish under the snowfall still...
REGARDLESS OF THE SHORTCOMINGS OF the CWA, I place most of the blame for Elisa's death on people in the neighborhood who knew this family. Awilda Lopez, a brutish beast of a woman who unmercifully abused Elisa and beat her to death, could not have got away with this if someone had stopped by to question and report her as many times as was necessary to get the child away from her mother. We are all our brothers' and sisters' keepers. We cannot wait for someone else to do the right thing. If we see something that is wrong...
