Frans Hals has been called a wife-beater, a tosspot, a congenital bankrupt and an angel with a brush. The first three charges rest on the petty court records of Haarlem, Holland, the last on about 300 paintings scattered throughout the world. The court records show a sorry existence, the paintings a radiant one. Hals's life was both. He fathered 14 children, often went cold and hungry with his brood, died penniless (in 1666) at the age of 86. In good times he would march off to the club, being fond of music, beer and jolly company...
...over the world, worked at everything from sheepshearing and ship trimming to sitting still on a South Sea island. Sitting still came hardest to Lye, who sees and best understands the world and himself in terms of motion. On nights off, he likes to dance like an egg beater to Dixieland jazz. His conversation crackles like Chinese fireworks. Some 25 years ago Lye hit on the then revolutionary idea of painting abstractions directly on motion-picture films-a process that has since become commonplace in art film circles. ...York's vacationing Governor-elect Nelson Rockefeller gamely plowed through a new, unsought role: stooge on an eggbeater spiel. Following some 20 minutes of political chitchat, sultry Interviewer Lidia Matos casually stuck an appliance in Rocky's grip, asked the key question: What is it? An egg beater, answered Rockefeller, brightly but warily. "You're right," warbled Saleswoman Matos, beaming into the camera. "It's the lightest, most efficient egg beater made in Brazil...
...cases of fraud, 25 cases of falsification of documents, and various charges of unlawfully assuming academic titles. While all Germany guffawed at the hoax pulled on the new German army, the state prosecutor indignantly stated that the accused was plain Robert Schneider, 39, a house painter, carpet beater and handyman from Vienna who had already served time in an Austrian jail for earlier forgeries...
Last week Chris had to share top billing with 16-year-old Sylvia Ruuska of Berkeley, Calif., another potential world-beater who specializes in the longer distances. Sylvia set a world record (5:43.7) in the 400-meter individual medley, an American mark (20:34.6) in the 1,500-meter freestyle. In the one event where the two met, Sylvia used her greater strength to outlast the smoother-stroking Chris in the 400-meter freestyle. At week's end, U.S. prospects for dethroning the Australian girls looked brighter...
