Last week, the burly young (28) Maharaja, known to his friends as "Funny Face," was busy as a beaver rising to the level of common man in company with some 30 other bejeweled ex-potentates of India. All of them, stripped of princely power by their nation's republican constitution, are running for office in India's first general election, a month-long affair involving more than 176 million voters, 80% of whom are illiterate...

This air show, watched by U.S. Air Force procurement officers, was a dash of superfluous salesmanship by De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, Ltd. to mark the first deliveries on a big order of Beavers for the U.S. Air Force. U.S. experts were sold on the Beaver early this year when they tested the plane. They ordered 109 to start, now have plans to buy up to 750 of the rugged, $29,000 planes for battlefield air-evacuation and courier duty...

Easy to fly on wheels, floats or skis, with a 1,875-lb. work load and a maximum 630-mile cruising range, the Beaver is an ideal frontier plane. Canadian bush airlines clamored for them as soon as the first one came off the assembly line in 1947. De Havilland sold Beavers in Finland, Indonesia, Colombia, Malaya, Rhodesia and Chile. Now better than half the plant's entire output (currently 12 planes a month) will be delivered to the U.S. Army and Air Force...

...winnowed out of a Pulitzer-prize history by Bernard DeVoto, the story tamely recalls 1950'S Broken Arrow, without its surprise or suspense. Trapper Gable marries a proud Indian maiden (Maria Elena Marques) so he can use her to ease his way into the beaver-rich bailiwick of her grandfather, a Blackfoot chief (played by well-disguised Oldtimer Jack Holt). On the trail, he learns to love and respect her. Their marriage wins the blessing of the Blackfoot ruler and gives them a son. But when one of Gable's men kills the old chief to satisfy...

...Beaver-busy, Baker moved on to Manhattan, was soon vice-president of a credit company. In 1925, when two former Beaver associates came to him with options on rich gypsum ores* near Buffalo, the three teamed up to form National Gypsum, and buck U.S. Gypsum, which then had a virtual monopoly on wallboard. They had $150,000 in capital, and figured that they needed $2,000,000. Baker raised it in four months by sending his salesmen out to sell stock instead of wallboard. In 1926, with a total of 57 employees, he began mining the gypsum and turning...
