Rear Admiral Arleigh Albert ("31-Knot") Burke, 49, Commander, U.S. Cruiser Division 5, earned his nickname early in the Pacific war as commander of the 23rd ("Little Beaver") Destroyer Squadron. His invariable reply to battle movement orders: "Am proceeding at 31 knots." Later promoted to captain and chief of staff to Admiral Marc Mitscher, of famed Task Force 58.
