...When we finally arrived at my place of residence for the next two months, after 24 hours of solid traveling, I wanted nothing more than to go to sleep. I was therefore astonished when I entered my room. I had to restrain myself from blurting out, "Where's the bed?" I hadn't even considered the possibility that the rooms would be decorated in traditional Japanese style, with Japanese futons instead of beds. The American voter has been made party to an extended infomercial whose highlights have been the scintillating interludes from the farcical partisan monotony: Elizabeth Dole as talk-show host, Susan McDougal in chains, Dick Morris in bed. Poor Lord Melbourne (whose biography by David Cecil was J.F.K.'s favorite book) suffered stoically for years while his ardent and unstable wife, Lady Caroline Lamb, made an idiot of herself with Lord Byron and others. But at least Melbourne, Lady Caroline and Byron were more interesting than Charles and Diana. Maybe Bill Clinton belongs to a more vigorous tradition of plebeian friskiness: Tom Jones...
