Another apparent example of sloppy procedures nearly led to the death of an Eastern Express pilot last week. Pilot Henry Dempsey and Co-Pilot Paul Boucher took off in a Beechcraft 99 commuter plane from Portland, Me., without any passengers -- and seemingly without the rear door securely fastened. When Dempsey went back to close it, the plane ran into turbulence, and he was tossed against the door. Hinged at the bottom, it swung down, and Dempsey fell forward with it. He clung to the door, head down, with only his legs inside the aircraft...
Joseph Longo, 33, a civilian American pilot, was turned over to a U.S. congressional delegation visiting Angola last week after he spent nearly ten weeks in captivity. Longo's Beechcraft Bonanza was forced down by an Angolan jet fighter last April over Namibia, where the plane was scheduled to be delivered. "The treatment got better as time went on," Longo said of his detention. When he arrived in the U.S., however, Longo cited "bad food, lice and lizards" as hardships that he endured...
...Battalion, from Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Ga., is separated from the rest of the compound by triple-concertina barbed wire and signs cautioning would-be intruders that sentries are allowed to use "deadly force." The 224th's activities are to fly OV-1B Mohawk and RU-21J Beechcraft reconnaissance aircraft loaded with surveillance gear over El Salvador and gather information on the movements of F.M.L.N. guerrillas...
...airspace over northeastern El Salvador, U.S. OV-1B MOhawk and RU-21J Beechcraft reconnaissance aircraft based in nearby Palmerola, Honduras, are conducting discreet surveillance missions. The flights, manned by pilots from the U.S. 224th Military Intelligence Battalion, have been under way since last month. Supplementing similar missions by longer-range RC-130 reconnaissance aircraft from Howard Air Force Base in Panama, the flights are intended to help fend off an anticipated increase in guerrilla activity as the March 25 election approaches. For the Reagan Administration, the Honduras-based forays have another advantage: they do not violate the self-imposed...
...bizarre does its best work in conventional forms. There are the hobbyist enthusiasms: the nudist nuptials, for example, and the ceremonies for skindivers performed underwater. In April a couple were married while circling above California's Santa Monica mountains, scrunched down with the minister in a single-engine Beechcraft Sierra. The rest of the wedding party, including the mother of the bride and the maid of honor, flew alongside in a second Beechcraft four-seater, then-faces grimacing merrily and soundlessly in the little windows...
