...mission of Benstead and his white-clad cuisine team to put it in front of them. For today's lunch, the "livin' innies"-as he calls the resident troops who use the mess-will hoe into offerings like beef stroganoff, BBQ pork chops, chicken ? la king, Swiss roll and pavlova. Steak's "an old favorite," and there's a potato option at every meal. But the modern soldier is at ease with terms like parmigiana, and unfazed in the face of quiche. He's not slow to criticize, either: "You are only as good as your last meal," says...
...this region's few inhabited places. Historian Geoffrey Blainey described men with gold lust traveling the final 1,000 km from Katherine. "The manager of Spring Vale reported that 'great numbers of men from Queensland have passed by, some of them very undesirable characters, who prefer picking their own beef and horse-flesh,'" he writes in The Rush That Never Ended. Look around the café and you might notice something odd: almost every patron is male and almost every server is female. Go outside and the story is similar. While men wile away the days idling over iced coffee, women toil in the paddies, planting rice, gathering it, and then manning stalls to sell it at market. Holding all top political...
...Eventually I did have a good local meal in Jamestown. In fact I can highly recommend The Brass Rail, downtown, which serves local beef cooked properly and decent ribs (not "Riblets," whatever they are, which Applebee's pushes). But I will go back to Applebee's in the future. I will order only beer to drink, and I will avoid everything but the basics - hamburgers and salads. But it will taste the same every time, and it will feel like it's supposed to, a neighborhood that's nowhere and everywhere...
